Nick Peirano just has to be very proud of his daughter, Carmen, and her fiancé, Eric Ferguson, co-chefs at the revitalized Nick’s Italian Café in McMinnville. Nick’s has been an integral part of the Yamhill County wine scene for 30 years. Here you would often find local winemakers gathering to enjoy Nick’s tasty and straight-forward Italian comfort food while exchanging stories and winemaking advice. I distinctly remember meeting David Lett for the first time at Nick’s some 20 years ago. David, who passed away just before harvest this year, was truly a pioneer in the wine industry and he will be missed as a neighbor and a colleague.
Since Nick has handed over the reins to Carmen and Eric, the restaurant menu has been transformed. Although Nick’s wonderful lasagna and the hearty minestrone soup remain, everything else is new. From house made mortadella or the trippa alla Milanese to the seared skate-wing with romanesco, or lamb three ways, all are creative and delicious!

Carmen and Eric are each very talented, well-trained top chefs, having met and fallen in love while they were working at the revered Quince Restaurant in San Francisco. Eric has an incredible talent for making many types of charcuterie (from Carlton Farms pigs, of course) while Carmen’s interests lean more to the pastas and desserts. Together they are a formidable “dream team” of culinary artists.

The wine list is deep and diverse and includes many good Oregon Pinot Noirs, including Domaine Serene, and a well thought out selection of Italian wines that perfectly compliment the cuisine.

Don’t miss Nick’s Italian Café for dinner. It is, in a word, fantastic! – Ken Evenstad
