APPELLATION AND VINEYARDS
The Volnay appellation lies south of Beaune between Pommard and Meursault. During the 18th century, Volnay was considered the finest wine of the southern Côte d’Or. Clos des Angles occupies a walled triangular slice of land close to Pommard and just east of the village. Perfectly situated midway up the Côte d’Or escarpment, its name derives from the site’s wedge-like shape. Our own small parcel of 25-year-old vines benefits from limestone-rich, pebbly clay soil and a gentle southeastern exposure, yielding wines of consistent Premier Cru quality.
The growing season progressed very quickly in the 2015 vintage. Flowering started in early June and shortly thereafter, was followed by veraison in mid-July. The beginning of harvest came very early and we were picking beautifully set grape clusters by the end of August. The warm weather dictated the tempo and led to magnificent grapes - the foundation of a great wine.
Rich, intense aromas of violets, cherry, and spice fill the glass when approaching this elegant red Burgundy. The palate showcases beautiful tension, vibrant acidity and great richness – in perfect balance. The refreshing, yet full, finish shows slight minerality and remarkable length. Both finesse and power are on display with this Premier Cru from Volnay.
