2015 Maison Evenstad, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru La Garenne Chardonnay
Puligny-Montrachet is considered by many to be the most elegant and noble appellation for white wine in Burgundy: a place where Chardonnay’s potential for mineral-driven complexity and balanced structure reaches its peak. The chalky La Garenne Premier Cru vineyard looks out over the valley from high elevations around 1,200 feet, close to the top of the Côte d’Or slope near the town of Blagny. Soils are extremely rich in Bathonian limestone, with some gravel and clay. Our own small parcel of mature 30-year-old Chardonnay vines has excellent drainage and good sun exposure from its southeastern aspect and row orientation.
Showing brilliant pale-yellow color in the glass, this powerful and generous white Burgundy conveys elegance on the approach with seductive citrus, hazelnut, and green apple aromas. On the palate, the wine is in perfect balance, with delicate citrus notes that give way to a divine, yet delicate, minerality. All of this culminates into a refreshing and persistent finish.
