2023 Château de la Crée Volnay Les Echards
The renowned Les Echards is one of the best parcels we own and the favorite vineyard of Pablo Bosch, the winemaker behind Château de la Crée and Domaine Evenstad. Located in historic Volnay, Les Echards has the most unique terroir than anywhere we own in Burgundy. Volnay is comprised of well-drained limestone soils, while the Les Echards parcel is more dominated by clay rather than limestone. It produces more concentration than nearby Premier Cru sites due to the clay that affects the shape, weight, and texture of the wine.

Winemaker Tasting Notes
The nose reveals notes of red berries (morello cherry, wild strawberry) as well as clementine and violet. On the palate, its acidity is pronounced and its body is well-structured. The finish is long, with coating tannins as well as spicy and roasted aromas (tobacco, coffee).
Vintage Notes
The winter was mild, but the alternation of warm and cool periods slowed the vines’ growth cycle, thus budbreak was expected for late March - early April. As spring frost spared our vines, flowering began toward the end of May. A first heatwave came in early July, followed by a second one between August 10th and 25th, slightly delaying veraison. At the Château de la Crée, harvest started on September 3rd under summer conditions. 2023 marks the second consecutive vintage delivering both above-average yields and quality. The Chardonnay has reached optimal ripeness while preserving a lovely freshness. The Pinot Noir shows great aromatic structure.
Volnay
Facing southeast due to its unique orientation, these vineyards have been cherished and cultivated for centuries, supplying esteemed entities like the Knights of Malta and the Dukes of Burgundy. Volnay is a village and appellation that stands just south from Pommard and Beaune. It is very distinctive from its neighboring appellations for its rather fruity and gentle body, recognized as one of the most elegant appellations in Burgundy. During the 18th century, Volnay was considered the finest wine of the southern Côte d’Or, and it still enjoys a prestigious reputation among Burgundy aficionados today.
