The Clos de Vougeot, located in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, is a historic 50.59-hectare vineyard that has remained intact within its original walls since being established by the monks of Cîteaux around 1110 AD. Surrounded by renowned vineyards like Musigny and Grands-Échezeaux, it achieved Grand Cru status on July 31, 1937, and produces some of the finest red wines in Burgundy. The vineyard’s soils vary from gravelly and limestone-rich at the upper slopes to deeper, clay-rich marl in the lower areas, reflecting the region's Jurassic origins. The château, a masterpiece of Burgundian Renaissance architecture, hosts the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin and is a symbol of Burgundy’s rich wine heritage.

It's been a great year for Bourgogne in this year's DWWA, with five wines in the Best In Show selection; this, the first ever Clos de Vougeot in the Top 50, crowned the region's achievement. The fact that the 50.6 ha of this vineyard is shared by over 80 proprietors swings a spotlight onto the exact position of the holdings of each, from powerful and age-worthy wines coming from vines high up around the historic Château to gentler wines made from low-lying vineyards next to the D974. Our judges, of course, knew nothing about the exact locational origin of the contributory vines as they tasted – but all were impressed by the wine's powerful and complex aromatics (the red and black fruits one might expect, but also brine, heather and rosemary). Its ‘tension and mineral richness’ as well as its length, elegance and sappy finish, too, lived up to the expectations provoked by this historic name. It's a Grand Cru of significant energy, yet its soft, giving tannins and juicy acidity will make it approachable very soon.

Winemaker Tasting Notes

An iron fist in a velvet glove! The tannic structure of this wine, present and refined, structures a deep wine with intense aromas of small black berries and notes of thyme and fine leather. The balance is remarkable and the finish is sapid.

Vintage Notes

The winter was mild, but the alternation of warm and cool periods slowed the vines’ growth cycle, thus budbreak was expected for late March - early April. As spring frost spared our vines, flowering began toward the end of May. A first heatwave came in early July, followed by a second one between August 10th and 25th, slightly delaying veraison. At the Château de la Crée,
harvest started on September 3rd under summer conditions. 2023 marks the second consecutive vintage delivering both above-average yields and quality. The Chardonnay has reached optimal ripeness while preserving a lovely freshness. The Pinot Noir shows great aromatic structure.
