2023 Maison Evenstad Meursault

Located in the Golden Triangle of the Côte de Beaune, the Meursault appellation produces high quality white wines, alongside Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne Montrachet. Found within the depths of the Côte de Nuits, hard Comblanchien limestone resurfaces to yield crisp white wines of great finesse. This appellation was brought to prominence by the Cîteaux monks as early as 1908.

Winemaker Tasting Notes

This Meursault 2023 offers a lovely floral nose (linden blossom) with sweet notes of almonds, caramel, and brioche. Its sharp attack combines stone fruits and bitters (grapefruit). With great freshness and roundness, while remaining precise, its acidity is smoothly integrated. The finish is long, with tastes of honey and butter.

Vintage Notes

The winter was mild, but the alternation of warm and cool periods slowed the vines’ growth cycle, thus budbreak was expected for late March - early April. As spring frost spared our vines, flowering began toward the end of May. A first heatwave came in early July, followed by a second one between August 10th and 25th, slightly delaying veraison. At the Château de la Crée, harvest started on September 3rd under summer conditions. 2023 marks the second consecutive vintage delivering both above-average yields and quality. The Chardonnay has reached optimal ripeness while preserving a lovely freshness. The Pinot Noir shows great aromatic structure.

In Meursault, where the hard Comblanchian limestone resurfaces, the transition from red to white wines is symbollic, with Chardonnay excelling like nowhere else in the Côte de Beaune. The village streets are lined with quaint houses of vineyard workers amidst stunning stone architecture, including the fairy-like church tower. Dating back to 1098, the monks of Citeaux first planted vines in the excellent soils here, now predominantly yielding white wines since the appellation's establishment in 1937. Meursault's vinicultural evolution from Pinot Noir to Chardonnay in the mid-20th century has solidified its reputation alongside Puligny and Chassagne, with optimal vineyard sites boasting Jurassic marls and marly limestone soils at heights of 260 meters, complemented by exposures ranging from east to south.
