Pommard can be found between Beaune and Volnay. Once owned by the Dukes of Burgundy, these lands are home to elegant and fresh red wines, crafted entirely from Pinot Noir. Facing east, “Les Grands Épenots” takes place on stony soil with marl and limestone, at the exit of the village of Pommard.

Our 2023 Maison Evenstad Pommard Premier Cru Les Grands Épenots Pinot Noir is characterized by red fruits (redcurrant, cherry stone) and marzipan with notes of graphite and sweet spices. A true gourmet wine with round and explosive tannins. The tannic structure is fine, and aromas of red and black fruits persist. A well-balanced wine offering a long and immersive finish.

Winemaker Notes

The winter was mild, but the alternation of warm and cool periods slowed the vines’ growth cycle, thus budbreak was expected for late March - early April. As spring frost spared our vines, flowering began toward the end of May. A first heatwave came in early July, followed by a second one between August 10th and 25th, slightly delaying veraison. At the Château de la Crée, harvest started on September 3rd under summer conditions. 2023 marks the second consecutive vintage delivering both above-average yields and quality. The Chardonnay has reached optimal ripeness while preserving a lovely freshness. The Pinot Noir shows great aromatic structure.

Mid-slope, clay-limestone soils provide excellent drainage, enhanced by scattered rock debris. Ascending further, you'll encounter Jurassic marls, accompanied by brown calcic soils and limestone formations. Our Pommard vineyards benefit from an ideal exposure to the generous rays of the sun, gifting the grapes with unparalleled ripeness and complexity. The altitudes, ranging from 250 to 330 meters, create an idyllic sanctuary for the flourishing vines.
