2013 ‘Grand Cheval’

"This unique blend of Dundee Hill Pinot Noir and Walla Walla Syrah seduces instantly with a bouquet redolent of smoke and licorice, tobacco and vanilla. Though it's Syrah that seems dominant, adding flavors of supple purple fruits to the aromatic mix, it seems apparent that the Pinot Noir component extends the finish, turning a potent and powerful wine into one that exits with delicacy and breeding."
— Paul Gregutt for Wine Enthusiast

2014 ‘Grand Cheval’

A complex blend of Syrah and Pinot Noir, the 2014 Grand Cheval is a dark shade of violet. Expressive aromas of dark fruits, peppercorn, and cocoa-dusted truffle radiate from the glass. Lush tannins built to age beautifully fill the mouth and showcase dark chocolate, light-roasted coffee, and dark cherry flavors. The finish is long and persistent. This is an opulent wine in elegant balance that was built to age and evolve gracefully over time.

2016 ‘Grand Cheval’

The 2016 vintage combines the rich aromatics of German chocolate cake and cherry cordial with notes of savory black pepper, spice cake, and bay leaf. The mouthfeel is both plush and structured, ensuring that this elegant and balanced wine will age gracefully over time.

2017 ‘Grand Cheval’

Representing the best of Oregon’s east and west wine growing regions, the 2017 vintage of Grand Cheval beautifully combines traits of both. Dark fruit and mocha envelope the palate, with firm but integrated tannins built to age. Bright acidity and a liveliness on the palate ensures balance. This wine is the quintessence of power and strength, while still speaking to its roots in Oregon.

2018 ‘Grand Cheval’

The 2018 vintage combines the tantalizing aromatics of dark fruit and caramel with notes of savory black pepper, coffee, and dried rosemary. The innovation of this blend brings forth a balance on the palate while impeccably pairing with a variety of dishes. The plush yet structured mouthfeel ensures an elegant and balanced wine that will age gracefully over time.

2019 ‘Grand Cheval’

The 2019 'Grand Cheval' combines the restrained yet complex notes of dark red fruit and savory pepper while balancing its vibrancy through structured tannins, creating an elegant wine that is perfect for sharing.

The Story

About ‘Grand Cheval’

Grand Cheval is a cherished cornerstone of Domaine Serene created by our late co-founder Ken Evenstad that honors the legacy of his grandfather, a dedicated immigrant farmer who worked tirelessly alongside his loyal workhorse.

To make Grand Cheval we take the best characteristics of two very different varietals, Syrah from the Walla Walla Valley, and our own Pinot Noir grapes from the Dundee Hills, and blend them in perfect harmony to create our own version of the ideal “steakhouse wine.” This wine is substantial enough for the richest of dishes, yet soft enough to please any palate.
